Mount Olympus is characterized by a wide variety of vegetation types due to its rugged terrain, proximity to the sea, and the numerous microenvironments present. There are over 1700 plant species recorded on Mount Olympus, representing approximately 25% of the entire Greek flora. Additionally, more than 150 bird species and 40 mammals have been documented in the area, with 34 species of amphibians and reptiles. Mount Olympus is a biodiversity hotspot for butterflies in Greece, with about 155 species recorded out of the total 239 species documented in Greece to date.
